The Pembrokeshire Freewheelers
2002 Annual Club Review: August
The second evening dart took place in August, this time with the Castle Inn, Little Haven as the target. Sadly only five riders took aim, Brian, Linda, Mark, Peter Bannister and Teifryn. Peter and Mark were the first to arrive and missed the bull, but hit The Swan Inn instead, where the others just managed to find them amongst all the holidaymakers enjoying the sunny evening. Brian and Linda managed a score of one (drink) each but the others soon achieved their trebles!
The Greenways rides had continued despite the lack of support; one newcomer turning up at both Milford and Crymych.
Things looked up, however, when the next one from Haverfordwest took place, again starting at County Hall. Three newcomers arrived for the planned ride out to Neyland using the cycle lane from town and utilising the new section of NCN Route 4 to Cinnamon Grove. From there we took the Old Hakin road to School House and then through the woods to Johnston, where we rode on the newly extended section avoiding some of the main Milford road. Then it was onto the Brunel Cycle track to Neyland.
The three newcomers, Keith, Alan and John, were all keen riders and had come along because although they had seen some of the Route 4 signs, they had no idea where they ended up, and had not tried them out themselves.
We stopped at the café at the Marina for refreshments before retracing the route back to town. They had all enjoyed the ride of around 20 miles, and said they would come out again, and also showed an interest in joining our club.
Four days later we held the third of the Greenways evening rides, this one from St. David's. Again we had three newcomers, one local lady, and a father and son who were holidaying in the area.
Wendy led the ride on the quiet back lanes out to Berea and then across Tretio and Dowrog commons. We then looped back and rode across the old airfield, past the stone circle which had just been erected for the recently held Eisteddfod. This fooled the visitors who thought it was a prehistoric monument. We returned to St. David?s after a lovely summers evening ride.
