The Pembrokeshire Freewheelers

2002 Annual Club Review: October

The highest turnout of the year was achieved in October, when fourteen riders turned up at Canaston car park. Unfortunately the rain also decided to put in an appearance, just as the riders set off towards Llawhaden. On reaching Bethesda a coupe decided to turn back as the others plodded on to Llandewi Velfrey, and refuge in the café there.

Prolonging the break by enjoying bacon butties did nothing to help; in fact the weather got worse, and although we hoped nominated leader Vic would take the short cut back to the cars, he chose to prolong the agony, by cycling through Lampeter Velfrey and Llanmill before returning the bedraggled party back to base.

Severe storms with gale force winds put paid to the planned ride at the end of October. Mike was supposed to have led, but other commitments meant he had delegated to Karin. On hearing the weather forecast, she had asked Barrie to lead, as he stated he would be out whatever the weather. However, even he could not have managed to stay upright given the conditions that arose, and a decision was made to cancel.
